Apopka High School’s boys and girls teams got the season off to a successful start this past Wednesday with a win over the Ocoee Knights.

The boys started off well in their match against Ocoee finishing with a 211 and a lead of 123 pins. They lost some of that lead in the second game as they fell to Ocoee 120 to 147. However, this was the only game that they lost as they increased their lead in each of the next three games as Apopka won the match 918-696. Tyler Russ, Brian Beauchesne, and Dakota Smith all had 80% marks to lead the team in the victory.

The girls team also got their season off to a good start in their match against Ocoee. They started out the match with a 113 game which gave them an 11 pin lead. The girls never dropped a game to the Knights winning the match 587-465. Penni Hilson and Kaitlyn Charters led the girls with 60% marks followed by Keely Butler with 50%.

Both teams, now 2-0, will be in action next on Wednesday September 10 after school at Colonial Lanes when the teams will take on Boone and Colonial.

“I think that the team did well,” said Coach Lanny Kampe. “They got a little bit nervous in the second game and they tightened up. But they overcame it and performed well in the last three games. They’re a young team and I think that they will continue to improve as the season progresses.”

“Right now we have a lot of youth and inexperience on the girls team but I am very proud of the way that they came together as a team and overcame their nerves and I think that they will become a much stronger team as we go through the season,” said Coach Kim Kampe.
