Colonial

The boys varsity team defeated Colonial 2705 to 2603. The first match found the Darters behind 82 pins as two of Colonial’s bowlers rolled over 200 games while some the Apopka bowlers were trying to figure out the lanes and the oil pattern. The second game was the turning point as the scores rapidly changed, including the day’s high game from Cory Mullica with a 230. The Darters continued to out score Colonial in the final game to secure the victory. Justin Bacon had very consistent scoring with all three games over 192 and the high series of 583.

The girls varsity team suffered their second defeat, falling 2170 to 2243. The first two games of the match were very close. After the first game, the ladies found themselves behind 15 pins. After a substitution, the Darters made a rally in the second game to gain a 10 pin lead. However, as the lanes began to break down, so did the scores. Ashley Preston had the high series with a 478 and the high game of 178. Jolene Krause contributed a nice 176 game in the second game.

The boys JV team also won their match 547 to 537. The first game showed both teams rolling very low scores, with the Darters falling 20 pins behind. The second game saw the young bowlers game a 7 pin lead, only to lose that lead in the third game. The lead was regained in the fourth game with a ten pin difference in the scores, giving them the lead they needed to secure the victory. Jason Summerlin and Joseph Cummins had 50 percent marks to lead the team.

Coaches Comments:

Boys Varsity: The condition of the lanes were a challenge to our boys as they were drier than what we have been practicing on. Our scores were far below what we should be shooting. With only one more week before tournament play, we will need to work on different angles to prepare for what they may face.

Girls Varsity: Ashley (Kleier) and Stephanie (Baer) were the only two who improved their scores in the final game. When the rest of the team’s scores drop as dramatically as they did in any game, you can’t win the match.

Boys JV: We were missing some key bowlers for the match and had no substitutes to help us out. The boys struggled with the lanes but were able to roll enough for the victory.

Tavares

The varsity boys played two very close matches using the ten-pin system. The first game ended with Apopka rolling 896 while Tavares scored 907, giving Tavares the first point of the match. The second game was also close, 928 to 940, with Tavares again taking the point. At that point the teams switched to the Baker system, where the first game ended in a tie at 172. Then Tavares shot a nice 239 game, while Apopka shot only 161, giving Tavares the third point needed for the victory. Cory Mullica had the high series in the ten-pin match with a 411 and the high game of 214. In the Baker game, Chris Zugelder had the high percentages with 100%, all of them being strikes.

The varsity girls had a better series. The girls began with an 823 to 745 first series in the ten-pin match, taking the first point. The second ten-pin series was also won by Apopka, 817 to 694. Having scored the first two points, they entered the Baker games needing only one more point to secure the victory. In the first Baker game, Apopka scored 162 to Tavares 159, giving the Darters the needed point. The second game began with three strikes in a row but was halted due to time constraints. Ashley Kleier had the high game of 194 and the high series at 372. Christina Cardello contributed a nice 355 series.

The JV boys had an unexpected practice match against the Eustis JV team. As the finalization of the match was never made, most of the JV team did not travel to Tavares, expecting to have a day off. With the help of Stephanie Baer filling in to make the fifth “man,” a team was quickly assembled. The first game was easily won by Apopka 865 to 684, with the high game of the day from Matt Inman at 212. Stephanie Baer contributed a nice 185 game to add to the total. The scores fell in the second game, but the Darters won the second point 774 to 664.

Coaches Comments:

Boys Varsity: It was interesting playing under this system, but unfortunately we were unable to keep up the pace and score the points needed for a win. Perhaps the back-to-back games and the travel to different houses made the difference, but we had problems scoring the high games that we needed.

Girls Varsity: Our girls bowled some nice games in ten-pin, and they seemed to have good luck with the lanes. Tavares always has some good teams, so I was really happy to get the win.

Boys JV: We really did not expect to compete today, but were happy that we had enough bowlers that came along so that we could make a team. Eustis brought their JV boys to the alley for the match while the varsity boys went to a different house, so it would have been a shame to not bowl.

University

With three boys rolling over 200, the boys varsity team began the match with a strong start. They rolled a 1022 series, their high for the day, against University’s 884. With the large lead, the Darters relaxed on the second and third games, rolling a 924 and a 925. The final score was 2871 to 2573.David Parker had the high series with a 602. Chris Zugelder had the high game of 224.

The girls varsity struggled in the first game of the match, rolling a low 703 against University’s 793. The final score was 2306 to 2441. Ashley Kleier had the high series with a 494. Jenna Cardenas had the high game of 207.

The boys JV team also suffered defeat as they lost 648 to 737. The first game found them behind 32 pins, and they continued to lose ground through the fourth game. The final game allowed them to make up some ground, but they were behind too far to catch up. Joseph Cummins, with 5 strikes, and Jason Summerlin shared the high mark percentage at 50%.

The girls JV team also lost 594 to 672. University rolled a 172 in first game, putting the Darters behind. The final game was the only game that the girls outscored University, 132 to 99. Lynn Hohmeister had the high mark percentage with 50%.

Coaches Comments:

Boys Varsity: The first game of the match showed our boys in the same form as what they started the season, bowling nice scores.“We have the potential to bowl 1000s, but seem to be one person short on most games as one bowler seems to struggle in each series.

Girls Varsity: Two of our bowlers rolled unusually low games to put us far behind after the first game, making it hard to rebound. Our scores improved and were back to normal on the second and third game, but did not match theirs. University returned some good bowlers from last year and has a strong team.

Boys JV: We didn’t have one of our best outings and seemed intimidated by the huge surroundings. They didn’t adjust well to the conditions and suggestions.

Girls JV: The girls lack experience having had only a couple of matches this season and as the boys seemed awed by the large house.
