WEST ORANGE

The first match of the season was against West Orange on Tuesday, September 5. The varsity squads won their matches while the JV boys suffered their first loss. All matches were bowled using the Baker system, in which five bowlers take turns, the winner determined by which team has the highest total pin count.

The boys varsity team outscored West Orange 846 to 801. Cory Mullica led the team with 90% marks. Justin Bacon contributed with a string of five strikes to keep the team ahead.

The girls varsity defeated West Orange 709-666. Jenna Cardenas led the team with 80% marks, with five of the marks being strikes.

The boys JV team lost 569-622 in their first match of the season. Eric Lotti had 60% marks to lead the boys. With only one returning bowler from last year’s team, they showed their lack of experience in dealing with the difficult lane conditions. The team shows promise, but needs the experience of bowling on various lane conditions to meet the challenge.

The girls JV team had a bye as West Orange did not have a girls JV team.

Coaches' Comments:

Boys Varsity: The boys had some trouble with the lane conditions, but bowled well enough to secure the victory. It was very challenging with the center’s equipment causing several delays and breaking the momentum, but they managed to keep their composure through all five games.

Girls Varsity: This is a rebuilding year for the varsity team with the loss of the seniors from last year’s team. Ashley Preston, as the only returning Varsity member, will be joined by key newcomers and members from last year’s JV team that will help fill the void.

Boys JV: Their inexperience and timid approach on the lanes cost them the match. With more practice, they should develop into a better team and win their matches in the future.

TRINITY PREP

The second match of the week pitted the varsity teams against the visiting Trinity Prep squads.

The boys team showed the spark and determination to secure the victory, 2898-2311. Chris Zugelder had both the high series (661) and the high game (242). The scores improved with each game, from 918 to their first 1000 game of the season (1016).

The girls also won their match, 2400-1903. Jolene Krause had the high game with a 208, while Renetta Kleier had the high series (578).

Coaches' Comments:

Boys Varsity: The boys were excited to return to the 10-pin game and show their abilities. Four bowlers scored over 200, proving that they were on top of their game and ready for the victory. Zugie was hitting his mark on his way to the high series, with his final game one ball shy of a Dutch 200.

Girls Varsity: The girls had an exciting first game, scoring 892 pins. This gave us a comfortable lead and allowed room to make substitutions to give everyone a chance to bowl. With the absence of Ashley (Preston), the rest of the team had to step it up and proved that they were winners. This team shows promise of ending the season with a very good record if they continue to improve and bowl as well as they did for the first two games of this match.

OLYMPIA

The Apopka High bowlers had their third match of the week against Olympia Thursday, September 6, and secured their third win of the season. The boys outscored Olympia 3056-2296 in an exciting set of three games. The first game set the pace for the day with a very nice 1056 score, with three bowlers scoring over 200. The excitement built as David Parker rolled ten strikes in a roll before leaving a single pin on his second ball in the tenth frame, resulting in his high game of 289; he ended his series with a very respectable 747 score. David was joined by two other bowlers, Cory Mullica with a 632 series, and Justin Bacon with a 636 series, to lead their team in reaching their goal.

The girls continued their winning as well. The first game set the pace for the victory with an 824-591 game. The game total dropped some in the second match, with Olympia increasing their scores. Unlike previous matches, the Lady Darters improved their score in the final game to secure an easy 2424-1897 win over Olympia. Jenna Cardenas bowled the high series for the day at 545; Ashley Preston (536) and Jolene Krause (502) also had nice series.

Coaches' Comments:

Boys Varsity: David (Parker) found his line and kept his composure throughout the second game. The excitement built as he began his tenth frame, with all eyes on him as he rolled his tenth strike. On the next roll, the single ten pin stood, and he flawlessly threw his final ball to knock it down. We were all very proud of his score and his calmness throughout the second game. The boys were eager to earn their 3000 series, and David really helped pull them through as three bowlers’ scores dropped in the final game.

Girls Varsity: Ashley Preston led the girls with a really nice 204 first game. Although her score dropped in the second game, which is very common after an above-average game, she regained her momentum to bowl another good score in her final game. The rest of the team showed more consistent scores than they have in the previous matches, showing they are gaining their confidence and are determined to have a winning season.
